Deçani city

Deçan is located in the west of Kosovo at about 550 meters above sea level near the borders with Montenegro and Albania. To the west of the city are the Albanian Alps. A little to the northwest, the river Bistrica e Deçanit emerges from the mountains, which passes Decan north of the center. About ten kilometers to the southeast is the Radoniq reservoir, which is the second largest lake in the country. Deçan is about halfway between Gjakova and Peja. The former Deçan or Ulëza has been an inhabited place since ancient times. Today's Deçan area was inhabited by Illyrian tribes, namely the Dardan tribe. Kosovo was called Dardani in ancient times. The Dardanes were born in 335 BC. Subjugated by Macedonia.

One of the most famous sights is the Medieval Orthodox Monastery of Manastiri i Deçanit, which was built in the 14th century and is located about two kilometers west of the city in the mountain valley. The monastery consecrated to Christ Pantocrator contains the only fresco ensemble of Byzantine art that has been completely preserved from the Middle Ages. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004. Deçan has a cultural heritage that is characterized by the towers (kullat). The most popular towers in this part include: Osdaut Tower (Isniq village 19th century); Kukleci Tower (Isniq village, 17th-19th centuries); Tahir Sadri Mill (Isniq village 19th century).

The Palace of Culture in the city enables the optimal development for all cultural-artistic creations. The community also has a municipal theater where cultural activities take place. There are also 2 cultural and artistic associations that are active in the municipality of Deçan: the cultural and artist association "Isuf Gervalla" and the rhapsody troupe "Dervish Shaqa" and the "City Dance Group" were founded. One of the most important cultural activities in the municipality of Deçan is the national folklore festival "Eshkë e ndezur mbi Shkelzen", the children's festival "Ardhmëria", the chess tournament "24 Marsi" and the small football tournament "Luan Haradinaj".
In the middle of the 1st century the area came under the rule of Rome and formed part of the province of Moesia. In the 7th century the area was conquered by Slavs after Maurikios' unsuccessful wars. The climatic characteristics of Deçan are almost the same over the entire area of the Dukagjini Plain. Deçan has a continental climate with a Mediterranean influence.
